Duke in Maui, Hawaii had been using a 9E-CIM Little Giant pump. Little Giant's website lists this 4/10 HP pump as drawing 12.3 amps. As soon as Duke plugged this pump in his pond, his electric bill jumped more than $150 per month. His cost of electricity is $0.20 / kilowatt-hour, so his cost of operation is $200/amp x 12.3 amps = $2,460 / year if he ran the pump 24/7.
Most importantly Duke did not like this pump because it did not deliver enough water flow for his pond. The same people that recommended this pump told him to use 1 or 1˝ inch pipe.
In fact the maximum head for the 9E-CIM is 23 feet of pump head, where it will only deliver a trickle of water. At 2.5 feet of pump head the 9E-CIM will only deliver about 50 GPM. At 20 feet of pump head it will deliver 25 GPM compared to the Energy Saving Pump, which will deliver 42 GPM at 20 feet of pump head when turned down to 60%, and consuming a little over 1/2 amp at 230 volt 3-phase.
We recommended that Duke use our 1-HP Energy Saving Pump™, and replace his 1 and 1˝ inch pipe with 2" pipe. He now has his 1-HP Energy Saving Pump™ speed-dial set at 58%, and is not only saving lots of money, but he is now getting much more water flow in his pond. Imagine using a little over 1 amp (converted to 115 volts) versus 12.3 amps!
Duke's actual results show he will pay for his Energy Saving Pump™ within the first year!
Another Little Giant pump being used in ponds is the #567079 5/8 HP pump. At 20' of pump head it delivers 2,000 GPH or 33 GPM. Little Giant's website lists it as pulling 7.1 amps. 7.1 amps * $200/amp/year (at 115 volts) = annual operating cost of $1,420, or $118 per month (this is for Hawaiian electrical costs of $0.20 per kilowatt-hour).
Our 1-HP system sells for $949.00, and produces much more water flow at any pump head. Its maximum amperage is 2.6 (at 230 volts) and can be dialed down to zero amps. At 100% dial setting, and at 20' of pump head, it can deliver 5,700 GPH (if the pipe diameter is 2 1/2" or larger). By dialing down to the comparable water flow of the Little Giant pump, 2,000 GPH at 35% dial setting, the amps should drop to about 0.1 amps (at 230 volts). So the annual operating cost could drop to as low as about $40 per year (because the equivalent 115 volts amperage would be 0.2 amps).
This would mean a savings of about $1,380/year, which more than offsets the increase in the pump cost of about $800. After the first year savings, every year afterwards would produce more savings. So in 5 years you should have a savings of approximately $6,100 (after paying the pump cost back); depending of course on where you set the dial. The important point is the payback should be less than 1 year. Over a 10 year pump lifetime the savings would be $13,000.
Remember the solid-state electronic controller takes the single phase 115 volt house current, and converts it into 3-phase 230 volts, which is what our super efficient pump uses.
Here is a picture of our 3-HP Energy Saving Pump™ installed in Boise, Idaho. The controller is installed in the spare electrical panel. The speed-dial is set at 60% and is running a 15 cubic foot filter.
